From its beginning in 1953, the stamp show was known as SAREX, which the newspapers described as a clever contraction of the Sarasota Philatelic Exhibition. In 1966, the name of the stamp show was revised to SARAPEX. In 1970 the show moved to the Sarasota Municipal Auditorium, and the American Philatelic Society accreditation process was initiated. In 1975 SARAPEX achieved “National” status as a member of the World Series of Philatelic Exhibitions. In an attempt to eliminate confusion between SARAPEX and other similarly named exhibitions, the name was changed to Sarasota National Stamp Exhibition (SNSE) in 1991. The show continues to grow in national prominence and popularity.
Exhibitors at SNSE showcase some of the finest and most meticulously curated collections in the hobby. These exhibitors, many recognized at international levels, present competitive exhibits that span a wide range of philatelic disciplines—including traditional philately, postal history, thematic collections, and aerophilately. Their displays are evaluated by accredited judges based on criteria such as rarity, presentation, knowledge, and depth of research. Many of these exhibits feature items of exceptional significance, telling compelling stories through stamps and postal artifacts. The presence of world-class exhibitors elevates the prestige of the exhibition, offering attendees a unique opportunity to view award-winning material and learn from some of the most accomplished collectors in the field.

These professional vendors—ranging from well-known international dealers to local specialists—set up booths offering everything from rare classics and thematic issues to covers, supplies, and literature. Their presence creates a vibrant marketplace where enthusiasts can explore new collecting interests, acquire hard-to-find items, and deepen their knowledge through conversation and browsing. For both novice and seasoned collectors, dealers enhance the exhibition experience by serving as valuable resources and gateways to the wider world of philately.
Philatelic experts speaking at SNSE contribute significantly to the educational and scholarly value of the show. These speakers—renowned collectors, researchers, authors, and specialists—share their expertise through seminars, presentations, and panel discussions on a wide range of topics, from rare stamp issues and postal history to authentication techniques and emerging trends in philately. Their lectures provide attendees with deeper insights into specialized areas of collecting and often include visual displays, historical context, and personal discoveries.
